My 25th Birthday

On Tuesday, I turned 25. I wasn't really looking forward to this birthday for some reason but Shannon went out of his way this year to make it extremely special. On May 14th, we drove to Richmond, Virginia to the stay the night. We weren't really sure what we were going to do the next day but we wanted to be out of town.

The boys went swimming at the hotel that night and had a blast. I didn't feel up for swimming but thoroughly enjoyed watching them play and swim. My little guy is such a water baby and I LOVE it.

The next morning I woke up pretty early and Shannon woke up soon after. He got ready and went to the store and I stayed at the hotel so we could let Samuel sleep. Meantime, I took a nice shower and just relaxed while my son slept. About an hour later, Shannon returned (Samuel woke up about 2 minutes before he got back).

Shannon made me turn around and instructed Samuel to come to the door. He handed him something and Samuel brought me a balloon that said Happy Birthday on it.

Shannon told me to continue to stay where I was and hurried into the room. I wasn't sure what he was up to but I knew he was up to something! I continued to get ready while he and Samuel were "working" on something. Moments later Shannon walked in to the room with a birthday cake with candles and began singing Happy Birthday to me. Samuel was grinning ear to ear. It was the sweetest thing ever. He bought me a beautiful card and a bouquet of "chocolate bars" as well. The cake was shortbread with a delicious strawberry topping. Samuel stuck his fingers in it almost immediately. He LOVES strawberries. Shannon also bought me a beautiful charm for my Pandora bracelet. It was a butterfly. My morning with the boys was wonderful.

He told me that I could do whatever I wanted to do but I had no idea what I wanted to do. We finally decided to go to a local Children's Museum for a little while. Maybe it was more for Samuel but we had fun as well. There were several mama's there that were pregnant. It was hard to be around them but I did OKAY. We had lunch and then headed into Richmond while Samuel napped in the car.

We decided to visit an estate in Maymount that was located on 100-acres in Richmond. When we arrived, Samuel was still asleep so we decided to do some driving in the area. We returned about an hour later at around 5 p.m. to find out that they were closing down all the "tourist" stuff. The property was still opened until 7 p.m. but we couldn't go inside the house or anything like that. We were disappointed and almost left but decided to stay. I am SO glad we did. It was beautiful. Peaceful and quite. I love being that close to nature. We walked through beautiful gardens and hiked down to a beautiful Japanese Garden where a waterfall was located. It wasn't a "hard" hike but I realized how out of shape I was! We stayed for about 2 hours and all three of us enjoyed it. Samuel wanted to walk and loved smelling the flowers, seeing butterflies and loved the water. Six years ago on my birthday, Shannon had promised me that he would find me a waterfall. We never found one that day. When we decided to go to Maymount, we had no idea that there was a waterfall there. When we walked straight into one, I was so happy!

I love how we are all looking in different directions

I love him SO much!

We barely touched the property and we have decided to go back someday soon. I highly recommend it. I live in a very historical area of the country and I have never appreciated it the way I should. I never realized that places like this were so close to where I lived. It made me appreciate where I live a little bit more.

We ended our day with dinner in Richmond and then headed home. We drove through a bad storm on the way home and I got really anxious but thankfully we got through the storm.

I am so grateful that Shannon made my day so special and so glad that I was able to have a fun, stressed-free day.

Positive and Negative Feedback

On April 26th, I posted my very first post to my blog. Within 24 hours I had well over 1,000 views.

To date, I have received hundreds of messages from complete strangers. The majority of them have been incredibly positive and I think hearing from others has really helped me on this journey of mine. I've talked to those who've had a miscarriage and to people who never have had one but read my story anyways. I've changed how people see a miscarriage. Women have told me directly that they will now be more compassionate because of my story. Even though Matty was never here in a physical way, my baby has already made a difference in the world.

I've made several new friends and I've learned who my real friends are. When I finally made the choice to post my story, my hope was to make a difference in at least ONE person. I am so thankful that I have been able to relate to hundreds of other women.

I recently received a beautiful card from a complete stranger who could relate to our loss.

I truly feel God is using my Matty in all this. God has brought people into my life that I may not have ever met or even realized were my friends. I am so incredibly THANKFUL for the positive feedback, for the prayers and for the encouragement from all those who have reached out to Shannon and I. You have helped me and are continuing to help me get through this. Thank You.

With anything in life, there will always be people will disagree with you.. Even those who have experienced the same exact loss will try to pull you down. They will tell you that you are grieving incorrectly and that you shouldn't let things bother you so much. Being a Christian, I feel this is Satan's attempt in keeping me in a low point.

If you know me personally, you know that I am a fairly sensitive person. I care a great deal about how people perceive me. I know, I know, I shouldn't. But I do. It's me and I've always been this way. Maybe it has to do with my upbringing? I didn't have the worse of the worse childhoods but I had some traumatic parts. Even so, I am sensitive.

It's been four weeks since we lost Matty and I've already learned so much about grief and how it's different from person to person and even different from loss to loss. I didn't really deal with my dads death when it happened and I ultimately paid for it later. After losing Matty I started to write right away. I realized that it was helping with the anxiety, so I chose to keep writing.

About a week ago, I received a lot of negative feedback from a recent post. Everything before this, had been positive. It caught me completely off guard. Initially I was really upset about it. It bothered me that someone felt this way. One of the ways I have chosen to grieve, is through writing. I felt each and every one of my words were being torn apart and that I was wrong for what I wrote. It bothered me so bad that I considered taking my entire blog down. It wasn't my intention to hurt others through my words. It was a place for me to be expressive. Good and bad. To say what I wanted to say. As stated numerous times throughout my blog, it is very raw. I tend to let it all out and decided to be honest with myself and you in what I say. I feel if I hold back my feelings, that I will never properly heal from this. I held everything back with my father and I have regretted it immensely.

When writing my first post for this blog it took an awful lot to write it. I had dozens of messages I had sent to myself that I had to compile together to start writing my story. There were specific parts that were hard to write and it was very hard to re read it to make sure everything was the way I wanted it.

There are parts in the post Our Greatest Loss.. that can be difficult for a lot of people to read. There are parts that can cause "triggers" for others. I knew when I wrote it that it could be hard for a lot of people to read. But at the time I didn't realize how "triggers" worked. I wrote what was on my mind. I did not write anything to intentionally upset someone.

I openly apologize to anyone that I have upset or even offended by my words in a particular post. Please know that this is my journey. I have never lost a baby so I am learning as I go. I don't know the "right" way to do this. I honestly don't feel there is a right way or a wrong way. I think the key is being open and honest with your feelings and that is the purpose of this blog.

I will have good days and bad. My emotions will change. I am constantly learning. Some things will bother me more than it may bother you and vice versa. The same loss does not mean we will automatically grieve the same or that we should. There is no time limit on grief. I feel you do it the way you feel you should. If running helps, keep doing it. If writing helps. Do it. Keep doing whatever it is that is helping YOU. Remember that. We can't compare ourselves with others.

I am very passionate about what I say. Sometimes it may seem like I'm being defensive or even negative, but I'm not. My husband had to tell someone once "When Rachel talks like that, she is just being passionate. She tends to talk really fast and gets really into anything she is saying". Basically I show a lot of emotion. That passion isn't negativity. It's purely me being passionate something I care about.

This blog is also a chance for people to get to know me. The real me. A deeper look inside me. When something is important to me, I tend to be overly passionate about it. Over time, you will learn about the things that I am passionate about in my life.

I am very expressive. And I truly feel that is a trait I inherited from my dad. I know I have some things I need to work on. I tend to be passive aggressive when it comes to certain topics and I need to learn to be more accepting and acknowledge some things. Life is a journey and there is ALWAYS room to grow.

PLEASE respect that a loss is also a learning process. I am learning how to get through my life now after losing my baby.

Thank You.

Mother's Day

I decided a few days ago that I didn't want Shannon to do anything special or extra today. He had to work today so I wanted to spend the day with Samuel. We got up early this morning so we could go pick out flowers for Matty. I let Samuel "pick" out the flowers this time. Since I lost Matty, we have been going out to the cemetery every Sunday morning before Shannon has to go to work and we always take new flowers. It was such a nice morning to go. The boys helped me get the old flowers out and then played while I arranged the new flowers.

Thinking of you today and ALWAYS Matty

After I was finished we took a short walk. The cemetery is in the country so it is very peaceful.

I dropped Shannon off at work and then I picked some food up for Samuel and I. We headed to the park. I am so thankful today was such a nice day for being outside. We ate our lunch first and then we spent an hour or so at the park. Samuel LOVES to be outside and enjoys sitting in the dirt playing with a stick as much as anything else! We played some and also took a long walk to a pond on the other side of the park. He had so much fun and I knew after about an hour his little legs were getting tired. We headed home and of course he fell asleep on the way home! We snuggled up once we did get home and he napped for over three hours! I must have really worn him out.

He decided to "taste" it

My Sweet Boy

After his nap we went out to dinner together. He had a little bit of mine and then his dinner. Breakfast food mixed with dinner type food. He definitely didn't seem to mind eating carrots with pancakes, eggs and a grilled cheese.

Once we were finished with dinner we came back home to play outside and paint. We did feet prints and hand prints. He also painted two pictures himself. We had a lot of fun. It was very relaxing and MESSY. I have paint all over my back porch now but that's OKAY!

Don't those look like strawberries?

We've just been relaxing since and going to be picking Shannon up soon. Overall I've had a pretty decent day. I am really hoping we find some answers this week with some health stuff I have been dealing with. It's causing me an awful amount of worry on top of everything else.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to EVERY single Mother out there!

Thinking about all those who are without their mothers today and I am especially thinking about all the mothers who are without their children today (((HUGS))) to all of you.

What NOT to Say

I have been thinking a lot about the things that people have said to me over the last few weeks and I decided that I wanted to write about it. I feel like people need to know what NOT to say to someone whose had a miscarriage. On top of all the constant triggers in my life, I have been hearing a lot of hurtful things. From friends, family, doctors and even strangers.

What NOT to say to a miscarriage survivor:

1. "You can always try again." or "You can always have another baby.":

~ I have heard this comment numerous times since I miscarried. Just the other day I was told by my doctor "I'm so sorry for your loss but hey you can always try again." Yes this is true but it's not as simple as people think. When you find out that you are pregnant, you start dreaming about THAT baby. You should NEVER tell a women "oh you can try again" when you don't know them personally. You don't know their fertility and how long it took for them to get pregnant to begin with. It took Shannon and I nearly four years to get pregnant with Samuel. We did three rounds of fertility treatments (which all failed) and did numerous other things to try to conceive a baby.

We did get pregnant with Matty very fast but it was still work. It wasn't easy. It took patience and persistence to chart my temperatures every single morning for a two month. We figured out that I could get pregnant but it was going to take PERFECT timing. Again this took an enormous amount of patience. When someone tells me "you can have another baby" it really upsets me. I don't know if I will be able to get pregnant again. I don't know why I lost Matty at this point and there is a possibility that it will be hard the next time we try (if we decide to try again). Only God knows. It may take us another four plus years to get pregnant. I wanted another baby NOW.

People often assume that if a women loses a baby that she can instantly "bounce" back and have another. What if that women was told she could never have another child? It's not easy for a lot of women to get pregnant to begin with and for some, it's hard to remain pregnant.

I don't want another baby, I want the baby I lost, I want Matty.

Babies are not replaceable –

 2.   “Be grateful for the healthy baby boy that you have!” or "At least you have other children.":

~ I am 120% grateful for my son. I love him and I am thankful he is healthy. However, I will still grieve the baby I lost. PERIOD. My son will not "fix" the fact that I lost my baby. Maybe  he will make it easier for me to get through this but I will never stop missing my baby. Nor will anyone else. It's not ungrateful to grieve a baby you lost, it's completely 100% HEALTHY. Sometimes it can be harder for a women with living children because she knows exactly what she has lost.

3.  “It was not a real baby.” or "At least you weren't very far along.":

~ From the moment I saw the positive pregnancy test, my baby was a BABY. How is it not a REAL baby? This is something that will be argued forever but you should NEVER tell a women that her baby "wasn't a real baby". If you've read my story, you know that the baby I lost was very much a BABY. What defines a baby to someone? Does it have to take a breath before it's considered a baby? No.

Also whether a women is 4 weeks pregnant, 11 weeks pregnant or 20 weeks pregnant, NEVER say "at least you weren't very far along." That is disrespectful and very hurtful. People don't realize that it is painful no matter what stage of pregnancy you're in when the loss occurs. It's not easier at 11 weeks than it may be at 20 weeks.

4. "It won't happen again." :

~ How could you possibly know this? I know everyone hopes that everything will be fine with the next pregnancy but there is no way to know for certain that it will. It's very common for a woman to have two or even three miscarriages and it be considered "normal". I will never again get to enjoy pregnancy as I once did. I will live in constant fear if I ever do decide to get pregnant again.

5. “It’s probably for the best.”:

~ What's the "best" for me may or may not be best for you. Saying something like this does not make a person feel better. Miscarriages happen for so many different reasons and there is know what for you to know what caused it.

6. "There must of been something wrong with the baby." :

~ Even though there are some test that can be done, it is very uncommon to actually find a "problem" with the baby. Just because the baby died, doesn't mean there was something specifically WRONG with the baby. There are SO many variables to having a healthy pregnancy and carrying a baby to term.

7. "It happened because ______________." :

~ Since losing Matty, I have been constantly blaming myself. Did I do this or did I do this. On top of blaming myself, I feel like those around of me are in a way "blaming" me or my choices. Again no one really knows why I lost my baby and for people to speculate why they think I did, is hurtful. Unless I pursued medical testing with Matty, no one will ever be able to know for certain what caused the loss. And even with testing, it can come back inconclusive.

In the past few weeks I have heard...

"It happened because you were breastfeeding while pregnant....."
"It happened because you were taking morning sickness pills....."
"It happened because you have gallstones....."
"It happened because you have PCOS....."
"It happened because you were taking prenatal pills....."
"It happened because you were not eating enough....."

8. "I know what you are going through." :

~ Unless you have personally experienced a miscarriage, please do not say that you "understand" when you do not. Just like with anything else in life, unless you have experienced it, you simple do not know what a person is going through.

9. "Shouldn't you be over this by now?" or "This won't affect the rest of your life."

~ NO. I will never ever get over this fully. Yes my heart will heal some but a part of me will ALWAYS be missing. I lost a part of me and a part of my husband. We lost something that we created together I will in no way EVER forget about my baby. And this has already affected the rest of my life. I am no longer the same person I was three weeks ago. I am a mother of a 18.5 month old and a mother of an angel. Matty will be apart of my life for as long as I live.

What should you say:

I'm so sorry.

Triggers

If you've ever experienced a loss in your life, you may be familiar with the term "trigger". A trigger is usually something that forces you to face your grief at any given moment. These triggers can start soon after your loss and can continue for weeks, months or even years afterward.

A trigger is usually a "reminder" of your grief. It can be anywhere. A certain day of the week can force you to face your loss or sometimes a certain smell can remind you of something. Anniversaries, birthdays and holidays can be especially hard. If you've lost a parent, things related to Mother's Day or Father's Day can be difficult. If you've lost a baby, seeing a women who is pregnant can often cause a wide range of emotions. These emotions can range from feeling empty to angry to feeling sad.

When I was 19 years old, I lost my father. I was very close to him and it was a huge loss. Losing my dad caused me to to look at life differently. I started to value it more but also started to fear it.Even though it's been almost six years since I lost my father, there are certain things that still cause me to remember the day all over again.

In the past three weeks, I have been surrounded by things that have caused me to feel anxious, sad, angry, afraid and even frustrated. I feel like everything in my world is trying to constantly remind me that I no longer have my baby. That I will never get to hold my baby or that I will never get to know "was my baby a girl or was my baby a boy?"

Some recent "triggers" :

* I bought a few maternity shirts a few weeks before I lost the baby and I was automatically signed up for some baby samples in the mail and via email. Every time I receive something in the mail, it just breaks my heart even more.

* Yesterday someone kept calling me from a random New York number. I typically don't answer my phone unless I know the number. Maybe that's weird but I feel like if it's important, they'll leave a message or call back. They called several times and finally yesterday evening I answered. I said hello and the man on the other line said "May I speak to Angel please". I told the man that he had the wrong number. Instead of saying "Sorry, goodbye", he proceeded to tell me that he was calling from Baby something. I didn't catch the last part. He then said "Is anyone in your household expecting?" At that point I became angry. Maybe I had no reason but for whatever reason, it angered me that he asked that. I went on to tell him that I recently lost a baby and that I would appreciate it if he does not call my number again. I was enraged. It took me over an hour just to "cool" off from it. I couldn't believe how mad that phone call made me.

* When Shannon and I found out I was pregnant again, I started to go through Samuel's stuff. I began setting stuff aside for the new baby. A swing, a baby tub, lots and lots of gender neutral clothes and numerous baby toys. I had started putting everything in the room that would be the baby's. We weren't planning to set up the room for the baby but we began calling the room the "new baby room" instead of the spare room or "the office". Now when I see Samuel's tiny toys, clothes or his baby swing, it upsets me. I'll never get to use that stuff for Matty. Maybe I'll be able to use it for another baby but I wanted to use it for the baby I was suppose to have in November. I keep going back and forth on whether or not I should just give it all away and buy new stuff if we ever decide to have another baby. I feel like that stuff was intended for our next baby and our next baby was Matty.

* Babies, small children, pregnant women and hearing that someone else it pregnant. I started to imagine my life with two babies. A 2 year old toddler and a brand new newborn. I was nervous about it but knew that they would be so close growing up. A week or so after we lost the baby, Shannon and I went to a Children's Museum with Samuel. We were surrounded by pregnant mothers and lots of small children. I wasn't jealous of them. I just wish I was still pregnant too and it again reminded me that I was NOT. It hurt me. It hurt Shannon. I have seen a lot of children lately that are the same age differences as Samuel and Matty would have been. I cry every time I think about the fact I'll never have that. Even though I am happy for someone who tells me they are pregnant, it's still very hard.

* Double strollers

* Baby sections in stores

* Tuesday nights and all day Wednesday: On the one week, two week and three week anniversary of losing Matty, it has triggered an enormous amount of emotion each time. The first week was definitely the worse. I was already thinking about it and as it got closer to midnight, panic set in. For whatever reason that day and that time reminds my body of that experience. I suddenly start recalling the feelings I had and can remember every little detail. I haven't been able to sleep on Tuesday nights for the last three weeks. I feel incredibly overwhelmed the entire night and I think about the whole thing. Last night was the first time that I wasn't thinking about it initially. I was preoccupied with an 18 month old and an almost four year old. As I laid down in bed around 10:30 last night, my body started to feel weird. My mind started racing and I instantly thought....MATTY. I knew what time it was and I knew what my body was telling me. Even though this time and day is still trigger these feelings I think that over time it will lessen.

I know in my life that there will ALWAYS be things that will trigger me to remember the baby I lost. I know that over time that some of the triggers won't hurt as bad and that eventually some will no longer hurt. But I know certain dates will always hurt because they will remind me of the baby I never had. April 18th will forever be remembered as the day that I lost Matty. November 7th was my baby's due date, another date I'll never forget. I never want to forget my baby but I hope in time the pain of losing my baby lessen. I hope that it doesn't hurt to see others pregnant or to see baby clothes. I hope sometime in the near future that I kind find joy in those things again.

Motivation

For whatever reason, I woke up this morning with motivation. I was able to get all my school work done plus my final exam. I am SO happy that I am done for the semester. I am officially taking a "break" from school as of right now. I had decided when I found out I was pregnant with Matty that I would not be going to school in the fall so I am still sticking to that plan. I need some time to focus on just Samuel, Shannon and myself for a little while. School is important to me but right now in my life, I need a break.

After dinner, Shannon and I saw a movie that he's been really wanting to see. I can't believe I have seen two movies in the past two and a half weeks. Definitely a record for me! The movie was really good but the previews got to me. I don't like scary or freakishly weird movies to begin with but with anxiety, its TEN times worse. I felt like I was going to have a panic attack after 5 or so FREAKISHLY weird movie previews. It was horrible. Then by the time the movie started, the theater was jammed packed.

very anxious + overwhelmed = BAD IDEA

I really thought we were going to have to leave but I pushed through it and focused on the movie. Thankfully we were able to stay for the entire movie. I would of felt horrible if we had to leave halfway through the movie. I will tell you that it was definitely a CHALLENGE though. Shannon has done so much for me lately that I wanted to do this for him. Plus I need to learn how to work through this anxiety and this fear of of being around too many people. I don't feel so overwhelmed since getting home but the anxious feeling is still present.

Have you ever dealt with anxiety? Have you found ways to deal with it in a positive way?

I think I struggle with it most at night and it's a lot harder to be "distracted" at night while everyone else is asleep. Since losing the baby I feel like a lot of my past fears have resurfaced as well as a lot of "new" fears. I am hoping over the next several weeks/months to work through these. In the past I have let some of my fears take complete control of life and I just don't want it to ever get to that point again. EVER.

If you pray, please continue to pray for my family and I. I know in my heart that I will get through this but I worry about the "shock" my body has been through now. Will it be able to fully recover? Physically and emotionally? Will these new fears be a constant in my life now or will they disappear in time?

Hoping everyone has a peaceful night

Roller Coaster

I feel emotionally, physically, and mentally drained. I literally feel like I am riding a roller coaster when it comes to my emotions right now. I can't even keep up with how I am feeling!

I have been trying to finish up some last minute assignments for school so I can be done for the semester but I have been having a terrible time focusing. I've read maybe three pages in the past five days. I will start to read a page and then my mind just ventures off into a thousand different places. I can't figure out how to FOCUS. I thought engaging myself in a story could possibly be a great distraction right but I can't seem to get into the story enough to get to that point.

I only have two short assignments to complete and my final exam. My professor has been great and has even offered to give me an incomplete but I really want to get it done so I don't have to worry about it. I'm giving myself until the weekend to complete everything and if I am unable to, then I will take the incomplete to give myself more time.

I haven't taken time to write the past few days so I decided that maybe getting some of my thoughts out could help me to focus.

Shannon and I decided to meet with a counselor yesterday to talk about everything and I think it really helped but today I just feel that "lost" feeling again. That constant "up and down" feeling...She assured me that it's all "normal" but I still hate feeling this way. I hate not having any control of how I feel. I hate how out of control my hormones are and how those hormones are causing me to feel worse than I already do.

The past few days I have felt a lot of anger. Anger towards myself, anger towards family, anger towards strangers and a lot anger towards my doctors. I feel like I am searching for "someone" or "something" to blame. I feel if I am able to blame someone that it will make this whole thing easier. I know in reality that it won't and I know in reality there isn't anyone to blame. It's still hard though because I really want to blame someone.

I made a decision today to start seeing a different doctor. I know my doctors aren't to "blame" in me losing my baby but I feel strongly that they did not handle things the way they should have. I wasn't taken seriously and I feel it's VERY important that your doctors listen to you, no matter the circumstances. I feel that I have found a really good doctor and I am hoping that MAYBE in time I am able to find some answers or at least come to terms that I won't find answers.

While dealing with the normal physical aspects of losing a baby, my body is now suffering from some health issues that have resurfaced in the past week. I am hoping to see my doctor for that soon to make sure things are OKAY. Likely everything is fine but when something significant happens in your life, you begin to worry about every little thing. I am definitely ready to feel better physically. I know the emotional part will take time but I feel I should be feeling somewhat better by now..

I'm so thankful for my husband. He's been so strong through this all and continues to deal with me and loves me through it all. I really don't think I could do it without him.

I hope everyone has a good night.
